For all those Roddenberry footnoters out there, I’d like to remind you that the novel was published prior to The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock.

You know, when Spock dies in the Warp Core, Kirk loses his absolute shit, then finds out that he has to bring Spock’s immortal soul back to Vulcan? Then discovers he abandoned Spock’s reincarnated body, and confesses that if he doesn’t White Knight across the galaxy to the forbidden planet he’d risk losing his own soul? So he steals the Enterprise, defies Starfleet, blows up the Enterprise, fights Klingons barehanded after losing his son, all to reunite Spock’s soul with his body? After that, Spock (having lost his entire memory after the reunification) gazes at and remembers Jim and only Jim, while Jim grins like he just found out heaven was real and he had front row seats?

Yeah. It was published before then.

my absolute favourite thing about the kirk and spock dynamic is that the whole time you’re watching the show spock is gaslighting you into thinking that kirk is this loose canon and spock is paragon of logic keeping his captain on the straight and narrow when its very clearly the other way round. aside from being turned on by everyone and fighting like an old-timey boxer…. kirk is just like.. quite a logical, stable guy. like yeah he rules with his emotions but he’s rarely reckless or erratic, even in situations of immense pressure he’s always calm and measured. sure kirk is unhinged and insane, but we knew that right off the bat. spock on the other hand tries to hide how insanely balls to the walls crazy he is by standing next to jim and hiding all his derangement with logic. i think the reason bones beefs with spock so much because he is the only one who has noticed that spock is an absolutely unhinged individual. (jim is too busy doodling <3 mr jim spock <3 all over his briefings to notice)

Star trek is crazy because when it’s trying to be romantic, I find it the most cringe worthy thing in the world, and then Kirk and Spock will have “platonic” lines to each other that are  so earth shatteringly romantic that I want to burst into flames

I’m sure that someone has pointed this out already, but Spock’s “nobody’s perfect” in response to Saavik pointing out that Jim is “so human” mirrors the ending of Some Like it Hot where Osgood says “nobody’s perfect” to Jerry admitting he’s a man.

In Some Like it Hot, the “nobody’s perfect” line is basically Osgood admitting that he doesn’t care about Daphne/Jerry’s gender—he still loves and wants to marry him anyway. So, by the same logic, TWok’s “nobody’s perfect” line is Spock saying how he doesn’t care about Jim’s species: he loves him regardless.
